NP + V + NP2 + Prepositional Phrase
(I gave the money to mom.)
Slash lv. 3

Click to:

Use the same strategies suggested in the unit on NP1 + V + NP2.  Check student’s comprehension of prepositional phrases (SLASH Level 2). Develop concepts prior to or as part of the development of prepositional phrases ( e.g. in, on, under…).

Preposition phrases are a form of adverbials and generally respond to the questions of:

  • time (When?),

  • place (Where?),

  • manner (How?) and

  • frequency or duration (How far?, How long? How often?, How much?).

Strategy

Teacher actions are highlighted

  • Write the sentence 'I gave a book to David' on the board.

    • Tell the students that there is a different way to write the sentence.

    • Write: I gave David a book. Show the differences in the sentences.

  • Tell the students that both sentences are correct. They can use both in their writing. Using different forms makes reading and writing more interesting.

  • Continue with 3-4 sentences as examples, then draw a line through the first structure and ask the students to give a sentence using the new form.

  • Draw a line through the response 'Ruben gave a pencil to Francesca.'

  • Elicit the response 'Ruben gave Francesca a pencil'.

Advancing the Strategy

Teacher actions are highlighted in yellow

  • Put several sentences, each telling a student something to do, on strips of paper, for example, Give a book to Mei-Li.

  • Give a sentence to a student, have her/him read it and do what the sentence says.

  • When the action is completed, have students construct a sentence using the targeted structure.

  • Ask a student to write the sentence for display.
