Strategy
  • At the beginning of each lesson, teacher explains to students they are learning to ask important questions that help them summarize, clarify, and make predictions.

  • Teacher models how to lead a discussion about a paragraph in the text.

    • Students read one paragraph.

    • Teacher asks one student to answer an important question about the information in the paragraph.

    • Teacher summarizes the paragraph in one or two sentences.

    • Teacher clarifies any part of the paragraph that seems to be confusing to the students.

    • Teacher predicts what the next paragraph might be about.

  • Teacher continues to model paragraphs until the students understand the process.

  • Teacher names a student to become the "teacher."

  • Teacher provides as much support and guidance as needed.

  • Student "teacher" names the next "teacher" to lead discussion.

  • Teacher provides support, praise and positive feedback.
